The financial pressures of this inflationary economy have resulted in millions of Canadians forgoing the essential dental services they may require to maintain their oral health. The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a government initiative aimed at making essential dental services more affordable and accessible to Canadians. This blog will dive into the details of the CDCP plan.
Unlike most of the other medical services in Canada’s healthcare system, till now, dental care has not been covered, making it financially unattainable for millions of Canadians. This government funded program called CDCP aims to fill this gap, making essential dental services financially attainable and widely accessible to low-income families. This program will allow millions of Canadians to receive the dental treatment they deserve.
The Canadian Dental Care Program covers dental services that are deemed to be essential for maintaining optimal oral health. This does not include cosmetic types of dental treatment that patients would otherwise be healthy without. Dental services covered by CDCP include:
We recommend you visit Canada.ca for more information regarding exactly what services are covered in the CDCP program. It is also important to ensure your local registered CDCP dental office is compliant with the services you require; some offices may not offer all of these services. Contact your local dentist about the services you wish to proceed with.
CDCP is continuing to expand and broaden as the program matures. More provinces are adopting this program across Canada, and the services covered are also expanding. Since the release of this incredible program, close to 650,000 Canadians have received dental care!
As the program matures, more Canadian’s will be eligible to receive essential dental care. As of November 2024, adults aged 65 or older, and children under the age of 18 whose family income meets the requirement are eligible for the CDCP program. In 2025, all remaining ages and eligible residents will be allowed to proceed with this program.
There are some basic steps to follow in order to apply for the CDCP program, and all can be done online through Canada.ca/CDCP. Simply ensure that you meet the requirements and provide all the documentation required through the CDCP website. After you apply online and receive approval, you can begin scheduling your appointments with a dental provider who accepts CDCP.

The CDCP program has been a vital game changer in promoting the oral health of our elder Canadians. Since seniors face unique income and dental challenges, they were the first target and eligible applicants for this program. Helping the elderly population of Canada in the first sequence of this program has been proven to be a successful rollout of this program, and by 2025, the rest of the age groups will be eligible.
Starting from June 27th, 2024, children under the age of 18 are eligible to receive essential dental care in light of this program. A parent or guardian is required to apply on behalf of the children. This new stage of the CDCP program will help low-income families relieve the financial burden of having their children receive essential dental care, and we encourage all parents of guardians eligible for this program to apply on behalf of their children.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) was created to make dental care accessible to millions of Canadians without the financial burden of dental services. It has proven to be an essential healthcare initiative, helping residents all across Canada who need the dental care they deserve.
